Recently I went to the LA PTQ qualifier in Burnaby. I was over on the mainland anyway, and since I was already there I decided to attend and try my luck. I would need luck as I’d only seen Kamigawa-block cards for about 3 weeks. I was still learning the format and unfamiliar with many of the cards as I hadn’t played any competitive Magic since Tempest came out.

It was a balmy Burnaby morning when a van full of Victoria Magic players pulled up to Mishra’s Game Shop, a mecca in the Canadian West Coast Magic scene. The store’s history harkens back to the days of yore when the only Magic cards in existence had black borders, people still played for ante, and Moxes were traded for War Elephants and a Moorish Cavalries.
